Thanks for writing, we’re so sorry to hear that! :/ A skin reaction is pretty rare, but it can happen. Most of the time it appears to be a reaction to the texture of the wood itself being too rough for someone who is already fighting a skin issue. The skin does not like the wood and so you find yourself in this sort of catch-22 situation of trying to treat sensitive skin with a rough object.

There are other cases where perhaps the reactions seem to be tied more to diet or even allergy, but it is hard to be sure.

In all cases of a skin reaction or any other negative reaction to hazelwood, this is what we recommend:

1. Remove the jewelry immediately
2. Consult with your family doctor

If the symptoms clear up 100%, and you and your doctor feel OK about it, you can test the hazelwood out again, and we recommend moving it to a new area to test (so if a necklace, doubling it up around a wrist or ankle). If you get the same reaction then hazelwood is not your friend and you should dispose of the necklace, in the off-chance it is bio-contaminated in any way.

But our hope is that the reaction will not reoccur and that hazelwood will be helpful for you. And if you end up discovering anything new through this process please let us know, we learn more all the time due to the important feedback of our customers! :)

Hi Payton, thanks for writing, this helps highlight a very important issue of how these items are used. It's important not to place a necklace or anklet around the wrist of a very little one for this exact reason as they are likely to place it in their mouths, which is both a choking hazard and also not something they were designed to withstand. This also is why we do not offer a bracelet style for children. If they are very little, we recommend using an anklet or doubling a necklace around their leg under their clothing (needs good skin contact and keeps it out of their hands and mouth).

It sounds like in this case the safety mechanism pulled open. If you email us at contact@hazelaid.com we can get you set up with an at-cost replacement (or even a free replacement if it turns out there was a defect of some kind, please send us a photo of the point where the wire came open).
